Introduction
The BSD License is one of
the most flexible licenses among the open source licenses. It
gives a broad range of rights and flexibilities to a person
receiving any software under the license. The conditions
imposed for exercising such rights license are minimal when
compared to other licenses.
Rights
The license gives a person the right to
redistribute and use a software governed by it. The license
allows a person to modify and distribute the modified software
in any form.
Distribution
As per the license, any
person may distribute a software governed by the license or a
modified form of the software in either source or object form.
Any distribution of the software should be accompanied with
copyright notice provided in the agreement. If the
distribution is done in binary form, the notice should be
present in the documentation and other materials provided with
the software.
The license states that
the software should always be distributed along with a
disclaimer of warranty and liability provided in the license.
The disclaimer states that the author or owner of the software
who makes the software available under the license does not
provide any express or implied warranty relating to the
software. It further provides that the author or owner will
not be liable for any loss or damage resulting out of use of
the software.
Use of name
The agreement
provides that a person receiving a software under the BSD
license is not allowed to use the name of the organisation or
contributor for promotion or any other commercial purpose
without taking permission from such organisation or
contributor.
