TCS and Sybase settle
TCS and Sybase have recently settled patent infringement suits filed by TCS against Sybase in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division. One of the cases was initiated by TCS in July, 2006. As a part of the settlement, Sybase agreed to pay TCS a sum of twenty three million dollars in return for a license over the patents of TCS relating to inter-carrier messaging. Other terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.
Three Idiots Credit Controversy
Chetan Bhagat, the author of the novel, "Five Point Some One", has alleged that the movie, "Three Idiots" adapted major portions of his novel but did not give credit to him as a story writer. Despite the contract, which requires rolling credits to be given to him, Chetan is claiming that he deserves to be credited as a story writer. The issue has spawned discussions on scope and enforceability of moral rights of authors in India. The issue is being discussed and brain stormed at SiNApSE at www.indianipinfo.blogspot.com.
Copyright Bill Approved by the Cabinet
The Indian cabinet has approved the Copyright Amendment Bill on December 24th 2009. Now the bill is proposed to be presented before Parliament during the upcoming budget session in February 2010. The bill seeks to introduce various amendments into the Copyright Act including extension of the copyright term, anti-circumvention provisions, additional exemptions to infringement, extension of moral rights and so on. The Bill is expected to bring Indian copyright law in conformity with the WIPO Treaties on copyrights.

Opti wins patent suit against Apple
Opti Inc. filed a patent infringement suit against Apple in 2007. In the suit Opti alleged that Apple infringed its patent relating to predictive snooping of cache memory for master-initiated accesses. The Texas District court held Apple liable for infringement and granted 21.7 million dollars as damages to Opti.
Fairchild and Infineon settle
Fairchild and Infineon filed patent infringement suits against each other with respect to patents relating to semi-conductor technology in the courts of Maine and Delaware. The companies have now settled the patent infringement suits through a settlement agreement. The parties have agreed to cross-license their patents under the agreement. However, the specific terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
Patent Litigation between Nokia and Apple continues
Nokia has recently filed a patent infringement suit against Apple alleging that Apple is infringing seven of Nokia's patents. The suit claims that its patents are being infringed by Apple's products, IPhone, IPod and Mac Book. This suit has been filed after Nokia had earlier filed a suit in October claiming that ten of its patents in wireless technologies had been infringed by Apple. In response Apple had counter-sued Nokia that thirteen of its patents have been infringed by Nokia.
