NTP
sues wireless carriers for violation of Blackberry patents
NTP has filed patent infringement
suits against AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel
and T-Mobile. In the suits, NTP has alleged that the
companies are violating eight of its patents relating to
Blackberry technology, which relate to email communication
on wireless networks. The suits follow NTP's success in
the patent case involving RIM.
Digital
TV patent pool has been formed
Some of the top consumer electronic
companies have come together to form a patent pool
relating to digital televisions. The pool includes
companies such as Samsung, LG, Zenith, Matsushita,
Mitsubishi, Philips and Cisco. The patent pool was formed
with an aim of avoiding patent infringement suits and to
help members of the pool to use patents of others in the
pool. The pool agreement has a term of 9 years and
obligates every one who makes a TV that uses digital
broadcasting technology to pay five dollars running
royalty on each set.
US Patent Reforms and Limitation of
Patent Damages
The US House of
representatives haspassed
the Patent Reform Act,2007
and it is now before the Senate for approval.The Act proposes many changes to
US
patent law such as first to file, opposition proceedings and
so on. The change relating to limitation of damages in
infringement suits could be the most debated section of the
Act. The section provides that patent damages will be
subject to the value of the patent in a specific product.
Most patent holders are against this section and have
started lobbying for its modification.
Indian
Patent and Trademark Office goes online
Indian patent and trademark applications can now be filed
online. The Patent and Trademark office has introduced an
online filing system to facilitate electronic filing of
applications. An application can now be filed by a
registered patent or trademark agent after acquiring a
digital signature. In addition to that the Trademark office
has instituted online status verification of trademark
applications and online searching facilities.
Bajaj
alleges patent violation
Bajaj has alleged that TVS violates its patent relating to
digital twin spark ignition technology. It claims that TVS
has been using its patented technology without permission in
quite a few of its bikes including 'Flame'. In response to
Bajaj's allegations, TVS has denied violation of any of
Bajaj's patent claims.
